For many years, members and supporters of the Marlborough Sounds Restoration Trust do an amazing job in removing wilding pines from many sites around the Marlborough Sounds with the support of local Iwi and the community.

Biosecurity New Zealand (MPI) has been proud to support the Trust and Marlborough District Council, as partners in the National Wilding Conifer Control Programme, to advance control work on Arapaoa Island in particular.

Arapaoa Island has historical significance for Māori and is a highly visible sight for hundreds of thousands of passengers on inter-island ferries each year. The island, along with other parts of the Marlborough Sounds that the Trust has worked on, was at risk of its native bush cover becoming completely blanketed by wilding conifers (aka wilding pines).

Browning trees on Arapaoa Island (those photo from a plane, not space!) will soon disappear allowing the native bush to continue to flourish.
