Around 60 wilding pine control contractors and staff from Environment Canterbury (ECan), Zolve Environmental and Biosecurity New Zealand came together at a Safe-Start breakfast event in Timaru on 12 August.

The purpose of the half- day event was to discuss strategy, the work plan for the year ahead and the importance of adopting a health and safety culture where everyone is responsible for looking out for each other.

Richard Langley, the Northern Delivery Lead for the wilding pine team at ECan, said it was also an opportunity to strengthen relationships and celebrate the success and hard work of the contractors in what can be a very challenging job.

“It’s important for us to connect with the hard-working people doing the mahi out there for the wilding conifer programme. Contractors have played an integral role in helping the wilding conifer programme deliver for the region, but there is still a mountain to climb, so we need to work closely together with shared purpose.”

Presenters included Environment Canterbury wilding control delivery leads Robin Pieper and Rich Langley, Zac Robinson from Zolve Environmental, Adam Ross from Biosecurity New Zealand (MPI) and local Rangitata MP James Meager.
